Bond Improvements help Athletics
On May 17th, 2016 the community of Yamhill/ Carlton passed a bond in a 61% to 49% vote. A bond that many have been waiting a long time for. The last bond measure to pass in our community was in 2001 but that barely covered any improvements “inside the walls”. YC tried again to pass an improvement bond in 2014 but in a close vote, those against the measure won. This inspired those in charge to change their vision for the 2016 bond. The school district is now expecting to make updates to facilities including the floors, roofs, heating, etc as well as the overall security of the schools. New technology to help prepare children/teenagers for adulthood will be introduced and, last but certainly not least, a new sports facility will be built.. The new gym, built in a dome design, will pull double duty and serve as a community base in the case of a natural disaster.
The new gymnasium will be centrally located between the high school and the intermediate school. Two large lobby areas, new internal concessions, 4 new locker rooms, a weight room and rest areas will surround the OSAA regulation size basketball court with bleachers on each side. The original 1965 gym does not meet the basketball safety standards of OSAA with limited space and shallow run off areas. With the bleachers pushed back, the new court doubles, then can be split into two practice courts with a divider down the middle.
What does this mean for the YC sports program? Well… Everything! Currently gym space is so limited it makes scheduling practice times almost impossible for coaches with some kids practicing until very late into the evenings to accommodate all of the teams. As of today we have only one team room located in the boys locker room, so visiting teams, men’s and women’s, are forced to use the women’s locker room as a team room. With the building of the new area, on game days, visiting teams will have better locker rooms to use for changing and team talks. The weight room YC has now is located right next to the metal shop and is very small, so having a workout room in the gym is a complete upgrade.
These improvements will have a positive impact on every child involved in the YC sports program. We may even see the day that we are able to host tournaments for basketball, wrestling, and volleyball. We will certainly see the day that our elementary and middle school students will be able to look forward to playing in a safe and well maintained sports arena. We thank our community for this gift.
